The Missing Week
Pete is back with us after a week enjoying some time off, and since Adam returned home to Wisconsin the Motorhome Diaries was a one-man show. But it wasn’t as lonely as it sounds thanks to friends along the way. So what they heck was I up to? Thanks for asking:
After spending a week in New Hampshire, including a great weekend at PorcFest, we headed back to New York City on Monday. Pete and I were to attend the Personal Democracy Forum (PDF) and Adam was to fly back to Wisconsin. We had Tennyson with us (who slept part of the way) and after not being able to park MARV at the only Walmart with a parking garage we found one in New Jersey. From here Nick from Patriot Radio drove us into the city in an entertaining manner, if thinking you will die is entertaining. Adam, Pete and I checked into our swanky hotel which, like our registration to PDF, was provided by the State Policy Network (SPN) – thanks!!! It was a long day but we had to celebrate our final evening with Adam, at least for a while. We roamed the streets of New York City in seach of some food and drinks and we found a Mexican place named Cancun or something. We ate, reminisced and we may have hugged – I don’t know – and in the morning Adam was on a jet plane back to the land of the big cheese.
On Tuesday and Wednesday Pete and I headed over to PDF, well Pete worked out first as I slept, and then we headed over to PDF. SPN offered some fortunate folks, including us, a scholorahip of sorts to attend this event which contained hundreds of people who feel they are prominent in politics and new media. Except for some of the SPN attendees, the place was full of state worshipers. There were a few good moments, like when a speaker agreed with a questioner that the future would look more anarchistic. I joined the clapping I heard in the distance. Later I learned that it was Pete, of course!
Early on Wednesday evening Pete hopped on a bus to Washington, DC and I jumped on a bus to New Jersey to be reunited with MARV in the Wal-Mart parking lot where we left him. I’d be solo for a little while and, no offense to my fellow travelers but I enjoyed the space. My next stop was Westport, CT where I would interview Peter Schiff in his office at Euro Pacific Capital.
After talking to Schiff for a bit I hit the road to head back to Keene, NH. I discovered that one of the nice thing about traveling with others is that if something goes wrong while driving they can fix it. While I was driving I noticed that one of my cabinet drawers was open and a shade pulled down. The open cabinet drawer resulted in it’s contents falling out thanks to the vibrations from driving. Having windows covered in an RV is like driving a submarine so I pulled over and corrected this ASAP.
Getting back on the road was a pleasure since the drive to Keene is always pretty. I arrived at the Liberty Bunker where I hung out with a few residents, including Ryan Maddox. Ryan would be replacing Adam as a fellow traveler for the next leg of the trip and we’d be leaving in the morning for Burning Porcupine (which Ryan covered here). While in Keene I interviewed Sam Dodson about his courageous stand against people calling themselves “government” in Cheshire County, NH. They put him in a cage because they didn’t like him taking video of “public servants” on the job.
After our interview, Sam joined me and Ryan at a bar with the Free Talk Live crew for drinks. The bar fit all the requirements, strong drinks and girls, girls, girls. We conversed and like an episode of Free Talk Live, Mark tried to talk us into minarchy. Nobody was buying but we still love you Mark.
Ryan spent his first night in MARV which was parked in a lot somewhere behind Vendetta. We woke up and headed to a nearby diner, which sucked. First, their slogan was “where politicians and regular folk meet” and second, the waitress was old and rude. We tipped accordingly. We then headed to Grafton, NH (via Vermont) to attend Burning Porcupine for three action packed days. Ryan covered it here.
I was also able to catch Dave Ridley before he headed to jail. Like Sam, it was because he is trying to make government more transparent by taking video of government agents on the job.
Later that afternoon we headed to Hampton Beach. After a lot of trouble finding a place to park out 30″ motor home we parked over three metered parking spots at 11PM and fed them for an hour. From midnight to 8AM there is no parking enforcement so I set my alarm accordingly. Ryan and I walked the beach and I felt the sand and Atlantic Ocean on my toes. After returning to MARV I looked out the window to see a giant moon above and waves crashing on the beach. I like to tell people about the amazing back yard I have by full-timing in an RV and this night reaffirmed this for me.
The next morning we woke up and drove to a Starbucks in Maine for a full day of work. We ended up parking overnight in the lot there so we could use their wi-fi after they had closed. We then headed to Boston to pick up Petey. Boston deserves its own blog post so stay tuned but in brief, it sucked.
