Thanks Portland
OREGON – We rolled into Portland on Tuesday the 20th of October and parked outside the home of our friend Erica. We met her early in our trip at the Atlas Liberty Forum in Los Angeles and decided to chill with her after our drive. We traded her a t-shirt for some beers and had dinner at a local Irish pub in her fun neighborhood that evening. The crew and I were excited to learn that Erica owned Wolverine since none of us had seen it yet. Damn fine movie if you ask me and yes, we’ve been slacking on popular culture while on the road.
The next morning, Wednesday the 21st, we woke up in MARV and split up to work from some nearby coffee shops. Adam & Pete worked from a Starbucks and I found a place named Peet’s Coffee. They later headed over to the Cascade Policy Institute to interview Todd Wynn who later joined us at our meetup.
Meanwhile, I met up with our bud and fellow Fr33 Agent,J. Nick Puglia. We’ll have a video with him up soon. After Adam & Pete did some laundry we all met up and after a few errands we met up with Jacob Grier who is the bartender at the very swank Caryle. It was there that I realized just how scrubby the crew of the Motorhome Diaries has become. We were freshly showered (for a change) but I was wearing a “Support Somali Pirates” tee and cargo pants. Pete was wearing a black gadsden hoodie, that I call his superhero costume. Adam was wearing a green tee that reminds people that prohibition still doesn’t work. Unlike the manager there, Jacob took it in stride and made us some great drinks. It was great to see Jacob in his element after spending evenings in DC a year ago where he’d floated the idea of moving to Portland to tend bar.
We couldn’t stay too long since the 7PM meetup at the Branch Whiskey Bar was quickly approaching. When we arrived there were already several great folks there. The night went by quickly, a sign that it was a lot of fun. We took folks to check out MARV and along the way a group Pete was with noticed that we were parked across the street from a church. They attended for a few energetic songs and took some hilarious video. More than a dozen folks came out to say hello as MARV rolled through Portland and we made a lot of new friends.
One of the guests was LibertyPile, also from Fr33 Agents, who suggested McMenamins Kennedy School for the after party. It was an old school that was sold off and turned into an awesome bar. For the after after party we crammed a bunch of folks into MARV and that’s when things got hazy.
On Thursday the 22nd we woke up at a leisurely pace and met up with Nicky again. We took a driving tour of the town and filmed Thank You Thursday on the beautiful Portland Tram. We them met up with William Gillis at the Red & Black Cafe. He took us to a few sports that make Portland unique such as Free Geek and the Free Store. Free Geek didn’t want to talk to us on camera but Ben Aubin of the Portland Free Store (pictured below with us) was very kind to grant us an interview we’re excited about releasing soon.
Nick drove Will home and we said goodbye before the rest of us headed to Portland’s Multnomah Falls look at some beautiful waterfalls. The drive was beautiful as well.
It was a great few days in Portland but we had to hit the road so Adam started MARV and we began our trip to Northern California. Unfortunately we broke down in the middle of a residential street. Pete covered it here but a day later and 300+ federal reserve notes later we were able to roll out to start the final week of our search for freedom in America.
