Our day in Detroit (and Canada!)

{ Posted on Aug 04 2009 by Jason Talley }

DETROIT, MI – On Monday morning Ryan, Pete and I woke up in MARV which was parked on a Starbucks parking lot outside Detroit. We were able to drowsily walk inside and work until we met up with Paul Kersey of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy at 2PM. He was generous enough to dedicate most of his day to give us a tour of government destruction in Detroit. Paul made the direct connection between failed policies by the Detroit government and the economic conditions residents are saddled with as a result. We toured the city until 3:20 p.m. when we made a wrong turn.

Thanks to the GPS Paul brought (that was not updated to recent construction changes), we ended up taking an exit toward Canada with no possible way to turn around. We were Canada bound and if you’re a regular reader of the Motorhome Diaries you know that this would be bad news. We made the drive over the Ambassador Bridge hoping that we could simply tell the militant Canadian crossing guards that we’d like to turn around and have no desire to enter their country. We had a tour of Detroit to get back to and this shouldn’t have taken more than 30 minutes.

Shouldn’t have.

On the other side of the bridge we got into a queue of vehicles and passengers who were to be asked invasive questions by government agents. We stated our desire to turn around and were told where to park. Pete covered the events thoroughly here but we were stopped, frisked, MARV was searched inside which included the use of two dogs. One dog was for drugs which found nothing. The other dog was for currency and when we were told it found something we were all excited only to be disappointed to learn that it was a false alert. We were then told to wait to talk to a border bureaucrat in a sealed lobby. She had papers for us to sign stating that we “hereby voluntarily withdraw my application to enter Canada and agree to leave Canada without delay.” It was misleading because we didn’t apply to enter Canada – we took a wrong turn. Wanting to make it to the 7 p.m. meetup I signed the bureaucrats form, as did Paul. Pete refused, like he had during our previous encounter with the Canadian border thugs. Ryan had a different approach, making him my hero:

resist

Because of Pete’s refusal and Ryan’s subversion, the border bureaucrat stated “I’m glad you guys think this is funny” and told us to wait in the sealed off waiting room. She said that they are there 24 hours and that this would delay our exit. Pete’s philosophy was that the longer they held us the worse they would look. I just wanted a stiff drink at the quickly approaching meetup. We sat around for about 20 minutes until the border bureaucrat’s bluff was called. She used the intercom to tell us to walk out to our vehicle so that we could leave.

We were headed back to Detroit! Until we drove the few feet into the U.S. border checkpoint where a new armed gang calling themselves “the Department of Homeland Security” searched our vehicle all over again and detained us. These two encounters were pure harassment. They deleted the video we took for our documentary because as one of the crossing guards said, he didn’t want to end up on YouTube. Despite rhetoric, government doesn’t want transparency because if people knew what their government was up to they wouldn’t stand for it. We were asked plenty of questions by a heavily armed, t-shirt wearing DHS gang and after another hour of detention rooms, questioning, and a vehicle search, we were given a stamped permission slip giving us permission to leave their detention.

The entire encounter with these two gangs took four hours making us cancel the rest of our tour and making us about an hour late for our Detroit meetup.

Detroit Meetup

And what a meetup it was. I like to boast that the Motorhome Diaries would not be possible without the help of others. Pete and I are not wealthy, nor do we have perfect knowledge so last night was a fantastic example of how others make MHD better. It also provides a contrast between the kindness of the voluntary society we are engaged in and the violence inherent in the institution of government. The basement of Kurt’s place was full of freedom-loving folks where we met a lot of great new people and got to see Matt & Janet who were two of the organizers of the Liberty Summer Seminar that our previous border skirmish forced us to miss.

Janet signed our guestbook.

Also in attendance were Jason Osborne and John Shaw of Think Twice News. Osborne gave me the footage of my interview with Judge Andrew Napolitano and a handful of cash to keep us rolling. Kurt, our host, and his wife provided a lot of food and drinks. Additionally they set out a bowl and a sign asking for donations. At the end of the evening there was $100 in there which was spent on gas this morning to get us to Lansing and beyond. After the day we had, the kindness of our new and old friends reminded us why we are doing this. I want to live in a world without aggression perpetrated in my name by a criminal gang calling itself government. I want to live a moral life and can’t do that when money is taken from me to fund their violence which could be targetted at me or those I love.

And I’m not alone. The after party went on until two in the morning and I noticed that I was surrounded by fellow evolutionaries who seek voluntaryist approaches to promoting peace and ending state violence. Despite the actions of the state, I went to bed inspired knowing I have allies.

  1. How many times do you guys need to get your videos deleted before you start livestreaming to Qik or UStream? Seriously! It’s not hard. No one has an iPhone 3G or 3GS?

Even better, you could spend a couple hundred bucks on a netbook and camera, get a 3G data card and subscription (no idea on price), and stream everywhere you go. I think, at this point, it makes a lot of sense to do this.

  2. Just chiming in that that I agree a livestream for these situations would be ideal, also some small hidden audio recording devices.

I just got back from driving along the southern border (Dallas to San Diego). There were 3 or 4 border checkpoints we had to go through, plus a couple agricultural checkpoints (any apples from Vons in the car?). There are a couple new large buildings along the freeway for Border Patrol. Also saw a bunch of cameras/lights set up near the checkpoints, are they running plates as we drive by? Of course I live in Dallas and I can throw a stone and hit an “undocumented” worker, but no border patrol to be found around here. As we got into CA coming down the mountain (very easy to speed because it is a 6 degree slope) I saw 3-4 state troopers with folks pulled over, some (maybe all) had new cars, guess CA needs to make up for that tax revenue.

I am in software engineering but no time myself to write this application, but someone needs to write a phone app that sends alerts out via numerous channels (SMS, twitter…what have you) with GPS info to anyone within 50 miles that basically says “I am being detained, arrested, harassed, please come to my location and film.). As John C. Whitehead says, the camera is the new gun. Lock and load.

  3. Talk to Joseph Weaver at SPN about practical advice on setting up live streaming/archived video:

    http://www.spn.org/publications/welcome-joseph-tech-guru-weaver-

He did exactly that with the People’s Press Collective in Denver, and could tell you how to get up and running in no time. He’ll probably recommend picking up a Nokia device, like the N95:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N95

It’s a little pricey, but you could probably make a special appeal to supporters who might be inclined to pitch in for one once they realize what you could do with it — like live streaming to Qik:

    http://qik.com/info/faq

As long as your device has Internet coverage, everything you shoot is automatically uploaded and archived.

You could still use your existing equipment for most video coverage, but whenever you find yourself in a situation in which you suspect authorities will try to seize or delete your equipment, break out your streaming cam and save footage of at least some of the confrontation for later scrutiny, and posterity.

  4. It kills me to hear people complain about border security, you will be the first ones to complain the next time something happens stating, “The Government should have done more”. Most of CBP Authority is drastically different from conventional law enforcement, a border crossing is a “Constituently free” zone so to speak but you still have civil rights. Couple sections of law you might want to know about. 19 USC §482 Provides authority to stop, search, and examine any vehicle, beast, or person, on which or whom he or they shall suspect there is merchandise which is subject to duty, or shall have been introduced into the United States in any manner contrary to law. 8 USC §1357(c) Provides authority to search without a warrant persons and personal effects of applicants for admission for evidence which may lead to the individual’s exclusion from the United States on grounds set forth in the Act. Even though you took a wrong turn you are still applying for admission, and another thing not widely know is at the border the burden of proof is on you! If you knew the amount of illegal activity that is encountered due to being people being, “Lost” or a “Wrong turn” you would be amazed. If you feel that the examination was not conducted in a professional manner, ask to speak with a CBP supervisor immediately. A CBP supervisor is always available at the facility or by telephone. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that CBP officers treat all persons with dignity and that they behave in a professional manner.

  5. Next time, before you cross the bridge, hang a left to the US customs building. That is your last chance turn around since its still the U.S. side of things. Same deal at Port Huron.
If you see nothing, stop at a manned toll gate and plead for u-turn directions. They’ll get you outta there since they don’t want you blocking a toll lane collecting all that precious money.

  6. I think your blog need a new wordpress template.
