Our Weekend in New Orleans
LOUISIANA – After we left a long, but productive, week in Jones County, Mississippi the crew and I were due for some fun (trials can be so taxing). We didn’t have a real game plan other than a speaking gig at Loyola University with a meetup to follow the night after our trial on the 10th. Luckily for us Dan D’Amico knew exactly what was hip-happening that weekend in New Orleans so we followed his lead on what would be an epic time for the crew. Note that in the photo above, Adam is having so much fun it looks like he’s in pain. To Adam’s right is Randy Reid, a fraternity brother of Dan’s from back in the day who was a great host for us. He let us park near, and work from, his place the entire weekend. Adam even got to catch up on his favorite sports team, whatever that is.
On Friday Adam was a guest on the Saints & Sinners radio show and the following day Jason and Pete went on a tour of government ineptitude in New Orleans with a focus on Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath. Dan led the tour, driving us around his ride named “Lysander” for Lysander Spooner a hero to all of us. During our tour (video soon) we noticed an anarcho-capitalist flag painted next to “READ.” I don’t know who painted this or why but the four of us below parked and posed for what I think is a nifty pic. In addition to (from right to left) Dan, myself, Pete and James, who traveled all the way from Baton Rouge for the meetup and hung out with us for most of the weekend. James and Dan participated in our evolutionaries project where they told us how they rejected state violence and embraced a voluntary society.
That night we all attended the MOD Dance party (video below) and a few more bars. Each either had live music or a DJ. We started our night at midnight where I tried out some sweet new dance moves.
I’ve always liked Pete’s post on dancing, specifically moshing, where he compares it to a voluntary society. We later found out that Dan has a paper on this also.
To further illustrate the point of the dance floor as voluntaryism, Adam took the below photo that is a variation on the zero-aggression principle: Be nice or leave.
After the dance party Pete was attacked by a giant spider.
At the end of the night I found myself under the influence of the multiple Jack Daniels with an order of waffles in front of me. it was there that I witnessed this unprovoked act of aggression against Adam. Shortly after this we called it a night for a busy day on the campus of Loyola University.
Then on Monday Adam and Pete interviewed, Pete Leeson, a visiting professor of economics at the University of Chicago and author of the very well-received Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates. Look for the interview this Friday. We spent the day on campus working until Professor Leeson dropped some serious knowledge on us and the students in the audience during his 6PM talk on An-arrrrgh-chy. I only captured the last bit of his talk on my iPhone but the Loyola Economics Club and the Motorhome Diaries will be teaming up to release his talk on Lysander Spooner and Political Pirates in a longer, much higher quality version soon.
This Monday night speech was a great way to end a great time in New Orleans. Thanks again to Dan D’Amico and Randy Reid for hosting me and the rest of the crew for a great time in New Orleans. Below is the crew with Dan in the middle and Pete Leeson to his left.
