After we left Birmingham we headed to Auburn, the home of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. There, I had a chance to sit down with Mark Thornton, a senior fellow. In this video we delve into Mark’s speciality — the economics of drug prohibition — as well as touch on monetary policy, the disconnect between those who claim to stand for limited government yet advocate for an aggressive foreign policy and take-aways from his research into the Civil War.

  1. Re:the Civil War

The important takeaway from the Civil War was not the North’s intentions. I don’t think it’s any secret that the North didn’t want to lose the South’s agriculture and textile raw materials, but that doesn’t change the fact that the South left to keep millions in bondage. Without slavery, there is no Confederacy. The several states’ Declarations of Secession prove it, if we are to take them at their own words. http://blanksslate.blogspot.com/2009/02/libertarian-defense-of-lincoln.html

  2. I actually used Thornton’s drug war economics piece last semester in my senior seminar (Criminal Justice) presentation on ending drug prohibition in front of an entire audience of wannabe cops. Very useful information…

BTW Pete, I’m the guy you talked to at P-fest last year about lifting and muscular enhancements. Chow
