Mankato, MN: Site of the Largest Mass Execution in US History

{ Posted on Oct 06 2009 by Pete Eyre }

BOZEMAN, MT – Last week when working in Mankato, MN Adam and I headed a few miles west to Reconciliation Park, where we shot this video (Jason continued to work from a nearby Panera’s). As I note in vid’s opening, I learned, when arriving in ‘kato in January of 2000 for undergrad, that the town was known for being the location for the largest mass execution in the country.

I took some time and looked into the details and came up with what I think is a pretty objective overview of the event itself and those events that helped set the stage. Then, in a not-too-standard-move-for-MHD, I injected a few of my thoughts.

My intention is not to claim that I am the all-knowing holder of the lens through which this event should be analyzed (to prevent/mitigate similar situations in the future) but that I want to share my thoughts. To maybe get someone to look at this event from a different perspective. And though I don’t expect or frankly even want everyone to agree with me, I hope that it’ll get some folks to think what freedom and rights really mean.

Like anything we put out, feedback (pro/con) about the vid itself (content, editing, etc.) and the stance I take is welcomed in the comment section.

  1. The video is set to private.

  2. Sorry Bile – I had the post scheduled to go up thinking that I’d have Internet access to make the video Public via our YouTube account but Internet has been a bit spotty the past few days. Also, I realized that after I made it Public today some of the audio at the very end was out of sync due to a video clip that I had slowed down. It seems to be a glitch in iMovie (it’s happened once before) or maybe it’s my error. Whatever the cause, I deleted the video, fixed the problem, then re-exported and re-uploaded (it’s still processing as I type this).

    So, a long way of saying sorry for the delay but as I’m a fan of transparency thought you may be interested.

  3. got all worked – and the video wont play:
    “On December 26, 1862, the largest mass execution in U.S. history occurred in Mankato following the Dakota War of 1862. Thirty-eight Dakota Native Americans were hanged for participation in the uprising; a total of 303 were sentenced to be hanged but President Lincoln pardoned 265 at the urging of Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple. ” Most people don’t know that Lincoln ordered the genocide of more native Americans than any other president. The public schools don’t teach that Lincoln was a murderous corporatist Tyrant who the railroads put into power. That he suspended habeus corpus and arrested any newspaper reporter that criticized him. He enriched himself and the railroads by stealing billions of acres of land. He ordered Sherman to burn and rape and murder all the women and children in the south. He turned us all into slaves.

  4. And there is a huge damned statue of that son of a bitch Lincoln: right here in downtown Houston. Oh how I wish I was brave enough to take a sledge hammer to that symbol to the logic of power. “might makes right”.

  5. Actually the largest execution occurred in Waco, Texas when Janet Reno had around 80 U.S. citizens killed.

  7. Stinky,,,,you expect anyone to listen to someone who calls themselves Stinky? Not only do you show a total lack of understading of American history, (we’re talking major ignorance here kiddo) you also manage to even misplace all the humor that is usually associated with reading the posts of someone as ill informed as yourself. The stupid have their place after all and its most often as comedy relief. Shoo, go away junior. The grown ups are talking and its past your bed time.
