Flex Your Rights Drops Some Knowledge on MHD

When I begun to brainstorm who MHD should interview in DC, Flex Your Rights was one of the first organizations to come to my mind. It’s not the biggest outfit in town but they do some indispensable work informing people about their rights. I’ve been fortunate to know Steve Silverman and Scott Morgan, the executive director and co-director of Flex Your Rights, through the drug policy world and as this video shows, they clearly know their stuff.

In addition to touching on our Jones County incident, they gave tactics of how to best deescalate law enforcement encounters and hype up their new film that will be released this fall. I encourage you to take Steve’s advice and sign-up on their email list so you can learn when it’s released. In the meantime, check out their first video, Busted: The Citizens Guide to Surviving Police Encounters.

  1. I just wanted to bring up a situation so I can get advice.

Suppose I have absolutely no “illegal” things in my car, I’m only driving a little too fast (by the state’s judgment). While I would prefer to hassle them in this case, do I stand to benefit? So in this case I have no incentive to prevent search except the obvious (privacy), what is the best course of action? I hate to be completely passive to validate their authority but I don’t know that resistance would be useful at that point. If you have stories I’d love to hear them!
