Debbie ‘The Suburban Voluntaryist’
RENFRO VALLEY, KY- After our meetup in Indianapolis last Monday night we had a few days to hammer out some work before our meetup in Louisville that Friday, so we headed south toward the first pairing of Wal-Mart (where we park/sleep) and Starbucks/Panera (where we work). On the way, we met-up with fellow Fr33 Agent, Noor (pics) in Columbus, IN and soon after found ourselves in Clarksville, IN.
It was there that we received an email from Debbie, who writes a weekly column for a local paper(s) from a voluntaryist perspective, inviting us to stop by and park MARV in her driveway. We made plans to arrive later that evening. I should note that we first heard from Debbie over a month ago when I was back in Wisconsin and Pete and Jason were in the northeast. At that time, we were planning on rolling across the northern U.S. so we didn’t think it possible to meet her in-person, but our updated route (thanks to our Jones County, MS court date) put us just miles from her home.
When we arrived John (Debbie’s husband) and Debbie welcomed us into their home – not only letting us park MARV in their driveway but letting Pete do some laundry prior to his week-long departure and all of us to take showers. And they were kind enough to invite us to sleep inside that night – in the AC. As the night before we had slept in a Wal-Mart parking lot (the norm) with the door open for more air flow (not the norm) we gladly accepted. The conversation was great – we discussed everything from our tattoos to our respective paths to voluntaryism. We also had the pleasure of filming Debbie’s journey to becoming a voluntaryist. (See below)
The next morning I awoke to the sounds of John working in the kitchen. He was starting the omelets he had offered to make us the night before. Pete and I sat at the table and talked with John and Debbie some more. Again, the conversation flowed endlessly from topics about government force to fantasy football. I really felt comfortable and it was so kind of them to open their home up to us. We took some pictures and said our ’see ya laters’ as we headed off to take Pete to the airport.
It was a full day later before we got to see Debbie again, this time at our Louisville meetup, where she acted as our point-person, where we met a lot of great people including a retired tax collector turned anarchist, writers from various local papers and a couple who homeschool using a method called unschooling. To top it all off, the meetup was held at a very nice seafood restaurant, which is not our normal cuisine on the road so, for this Wisconsin boy, it was nice to get some breaded whitefish in my belly. Again, thanks to Debbie who insisted on paying for our meal (really mom she said we couldn’t say no).
The folks Jason and I met around the Ohio River were terrific. Debbie even tried to give (blame) MHD for inspiring her to blog again. The following is from her new blog called The Suburban Voluntaryist:
I’ve been thinking of starting this blog for a couple of months now and the tipping point finally came after a visit to my suburban voluntaryist home from Jason, Pete and Adam of Motorhome Diaries.
I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and it was quite refreshing, well after they all showered anyway, to finally meet a few people who just may be more radical than me.
I don’t think we can take the credit for this. Though we look forward to reading your blog and hope to stay in touch. Thanks for everything.
