The Growing Reality of Anarchy by Dan D’Amico

NEW ORLEANS, LA – When we knew we had to turn MARV south toward Mississippi for our court date in Jones County we knew a stop in New Orleans was due immediately afterward. Our last time through – the night before we were arrested in Mississippi – we had a great time. We connected with many solid folks advancing the freedom message through the policy and academic worlds.

On Friday we had the opportunity to speak with some students at Loyola University in an event sponsored by their Students for Liberty chapter immediately before our meetup, which went really well. Yesterday Jason and I jumped in Lysander – the electric blue TJ Crusier owned by Loyola University Assistant Professor of Economics Dan D’Amico, who was acting as our tour guide – to see the harms of government intervention and the strength of civil society in the Big Easy. We also found time to sit-down with him at his office, where we shot his Evolutionaries video and an interview about his background, area of focus and anarchy.

In this video Dan responds to the question often-asked by those that do not self-describe as anarcho-capitalists/voluntaryists:

If anarchy is so great, why isn’t it the norm?

For more of this, check out Case Studies in Anarcho Capitalism – a blog post Dan wrote. And stayed tuned for more with Dan.

  1. “If anarchy is so great why isn’t it the norm?”

It’s always interesting to hear a modern perspective, especially in the form of art, poetry, or music…or, in this case, all three.

“Anarchy is a sweet word, but we all need furniture”

This lyric is from the song “Anarchy” by Nobody Can Dance and I think is relevant. Anarchy looks great on paper, looks cool when donned by the punk musicians that influenced this song, but what we all really need is something practical.

The song, while somewhat ironic, is about following your own track and not blindly adopting someone else’s ideology, but it uses Anarchy as a kind of case study like Dan was talking about, albeit a more abstract poetic one.
